A cheaper city-center room can stop being cheaper the moment your alarm is set for 3:15 AM. The room rate is only one line in the calculation: add the night taxi, uncertain public transport, lost sleep, checkout friction and the buffer you need before an early flight. For a 6 AM departure, hotel location becomes part of the flight itinerary.
Start with the departure time, then work backward
Do not start with the hotel map. Start with the airline's required check-in and boarding timing, add the airport's realistic security buffer, then calculate when you must leave the hotel. A 06:00 flight can turn a pleasant central location into a 03:30 transfer.
The scenario travelers underestimate
Picture the last night of a four-day trip. Dinner ends at 22:30, packing takes another hour, and the airport train does not start early enough. The €35 saved on the room disappears into a €45 taxi, while the night becomes fragmented. This is the kind of cost that does not appear in a hotel comparison filter.
Airport hotel does not always mean walkable
Some properties use 'airport' in the name while sitting several kilometers away. Check the actual terminal, shuttle hours, shuttle frequency, reservation requirements and whether the transfer is free. At 04:00, a shuttle that begins at 05:00 is not an amenity.
When the city center still wins
If there is reliable 24-hour transport, the airport is close, your departure is later, or the final evening matters to the trip, staying central can still be the better experience. The decision changes by city.
Build a total-cost comparison
Compare room price plus transfer cost in both directions, expected sleep, breakfast you may miss, and cancellation terms. Put a value on convenience rather than pretending it is free.
A simple booking rule
For very early departures, shortlist hotels by door-to-terminal time before comparing stars or breakfast. For normal departures, reverse the priority and optimize the final evening.
Before you commit
Open the actual itinerary and test the weak point of the plan. Check the exact times, transport or booking conditions that matter for this trip, and verify time-sensitive rules with the airline, airport, accommodation or relevant authority. The goal is not to remove every risk; it is to know which risk you are accepting before money becomes non-refundable.
